How to Pick a PKMS Software
There's so many different PKMS software around, and many people discussing the pros and cons of different software, so it can be hard to decide on one single software.
Some people are extremely concerned with micro-optimization, who end up as software-hoppers, never actually achieving anything with PKMS. Unfortunately these people can mislead PKMS noobies and make them unsure of anything.
But I don't think choosing has to be difficult. At the end of the day it's about choosing a software you can stick with and works for you. You don't have to love it, it could merely be the software you're okay with, as opposed to other software which you hate using.
Just try some different programs
You'll get a better sense of if a program is for you if you try it yourself. Some popular PKMS programs include: Notion, obsidian, logseq. They each feature different workflows, so you can get a sense of what type of program works for you. And if you don't like any of them you can just search for more options.
Some people find that feature-filled PKMS programs aren't for them, and they prefer simpler notes apps. If you prefer less features then you can try apps such as: Apple notes, bear or google keep.
There are also some factors that should be considered, such as:
- Is a program only being available online a negative for you? Or is it actually a positive?
- Are you concerned about privacy? If so then you should cautious about data stored in the cloud
- If you want to switch programs, how easily is it to export your data? If you can't export your data, are you willing to start again? What if the program shuts down one day?
